India has approved Zydus Cadila's Covid-19 vaccine. making it the 6th vaccine to be approved for use in India after Covishield (Serum Institute), Covaxin (Bharat Biotech), Sputnik V (Russia), Moderna (USA) and Johnson&Johnson (USA). 

Here are 10 things you did not know about India's Zydus Cadila's Covid-19 Vaccine-


1. It is the first Indigenous DNA vaccine

Zydus is an Indian Pharmaceutical Company that has made the first DNA vaccine for Covid-19.

DNA vaccines are cost-effective and stable. They signal the immune system to fight the virus once injected.

2. It is needleless

Many people are afraid of needle vaccines because they are painful and slow. They also have more side effects. ZyCoV-D (Yes, that's its name) is intradermal and uses the PharmaJet technology. In PharmaJet, a thin tube is used to penetrate the skin in a 10th of a second so you don't feel any pain.

3. It has fewer side effects compared to other vaccines

ZyCoV-D is not intramuscular, which means it does not penetrate the muscles. Many vaccines are intramuscular and cause cramps and pain at the point of injection. They often turn sore and reddish. However, ZyCoV-D is intradermal and causes fewer side effects.

4. It is the first Covid-19 vaccine for children

ZyCoV-D is a vaccine for adolescents under the age bracket of 12 to 18. Schools are being reopened in the pandemic and the safety of kids is at question. However, ZyCoV-D will solve the problem because it is available for children. It has proven to be safe for children.

5. It is likely to roll out by October

 Zydus Cadila Vaccine is likely to roll out in mid-September and be available in the Cowin app by October. 

6. Its efficacy is at primary 66.6%

Zydus has claimed that its vaccine is 66.6% at preventing Covid-19 and 100% effective at preventing severe Covid-19. However, this is at its primary level. Further studies will be conducted to find out about its exact efficacy. However, according to Zydus, it has a base efficacy of 66.6% and thus is effective at preventing Covid-19. Another great thing about it is that it will prevent deaths.

7. It consists of 3 doses and Zydus is working to make it 2.

Unlike most Covid-19 vaccines,  ZyCoV-D consists of 3 doses. It is considered to be a drawback but Zydus Cadila is working to make it 2 doses.

8.  ZyCoV-D is easy to store and stable

The Zydus Covid-19 vaccine is stable at 2-4 degrees Celsius, which makes it easy to store and is expected to ease the vaccine situation as most vaccines are difficult to store. Another thing about it is that it does not need a refrigerator. This means that it can be easily transported to the remotest corners of India.

9. Zydus took the largest clinical trial for its vaccine

Zydus claims that its vaccine took the largest clinical trial consisting of more than 50 centres. This means that it is probably well studied and relatively safe.

10. It is effective against the Delta Variant

Delta Variant is a deadly double mutant variant of Covid-19 responsible for the devastating second wave in India. Zydus has said that it is especially effective against the Delta Variant.

How is it unique?

 ZyCoV-D is the first needleless DNA vaccine to be authorized. It is also intradermal compared to other vaccines. It is safe for children and effective against the Delta Variant. It can turn the tide because children are said to be vulnerable to the third wave. So if they get vaccinated, We can end Covid-19 sooner.

We should remember that there are some people like doctors, nurses, ward boys and also policemen, army men and other people helping in our fight against it.
